What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is an effective approach to healing, with a focus on restoring normal mobility and function through therapeutic exercise, manual mobilization techniques, and the use of effective therapeutic modalities to help ease pain and decrease muscle tightness. Physical therapy facilitates your body’s natural healing process to occur more quickly than it otherwise would.

We’ve included physical therapy at our Idaho Falls family practice because injuries, aches and pains are all too common for all of us.  Physical therapy has been proven to be very effective as the first line of treatment when you need help.  Rather than prescribing painkillers to mask your pain, we want to give you the ability to find pain relief without the risk of addiction to opioids.

If you are looking for an Idaho Falls physical therapy experience that can help you get rid of your pain and dysfunction and back into your normal lifestyle, then look no further.

How often will I have to come into the clinic once I start physical therapy?

That depends on the extent of your impairment or condition.  Someone who has had a joint replacement or a soft tissue repair/reconstruction would likely be coming multiple times a week for 6 to 12 weeks.  Perhaps you have not had surgery but are having aches and pains that have been an issue for awhile, making life difficult and unpleasant. The number of visits needed can vary depending on the condition.

Cases that are more complex and chronic usually do take longer to resolve than something that just started a few weeks ago.  In some cases where progressive disease is involved, it’s impossible to completely resolve all problems, but together, it is possible to improve many aspects of your health and ability to participate in the activities you need and want to do.

Whatever your pain or impairment might be, our Idaho Falls physical therapists don’t have a pre-determined number of visits that we will try and schedule with you.  Rather, we will evaluate your specific condition in order to determine exactly what is going on and how best to treat it.  Then they will make recommendations for you to consider.

Our goal is to help you to be able to recover, become pain free and get back to doing the things you need and want to do – and accomplish this in the fewest number of visits possible. In most cases, you won’t be seeing us for very long!

There are many things that you can do on your own in order to move down your path to complete recovery.  Part of our job is to provide education and instruction regarding the things that you can actively pursue on your own; things that don’t require ongoing visits.  However, in order to restore functional mobility and strength, depending on the extent of your impairment, there are important aspects of our treatment plan that you cannot do at home on your own. These are things that a skilled therapist can assist you with on your road to recovery.

Does PT really work?

Some problems are simple and easy to fix and some are very complex and difficult.  Two of the biggest factors in how quickly you get better are the expertise of our physical therapy team and that you are willing to actively participate in your own rehabilitation process.

Maybe you can’t sleep.  It may be difficult or impossible to do your job. You may struggle with your responsibilities at home. We know that you just want to get back to feeling good again. Our therapists are compassionate and kind and really do care about what you’re going through.

Our therapists realize that the only reason you’re coming to our Idaho Falls physical therapy clinic is because your life has been negatively affected by your weakness, pain or an injury and you’re looking for a pathway to recovery. They will strive to understand your situation so that they can better customize the treatment plan to help you meet your health and lifestyle goals.

While there is no magic-bullet, there is often a magic-like aspect to your recovery.  It is your incredible body and its amazing capacity to heal itself. It is often the case that obstacles stand in the way of your body’s natural ability to heal. As we work to identify and then resolve these obstacles, your body will respond, you’ll start to feel better, stronger, and more like the old you. Soon you’ll be back to doing the things you love!

We would be honored to be able to partner with you in such an important endeavor – getting back to being pain free and able to do the things you need to do and love to do!
